Faith-based initiative could impact ministries
Florida Annual Conference ministries
are adopting a wait and see attitude toward President George
W. Bush’s faith-based initiative bill, which passed the Senate
April 9.
The bill advocates charitable giving by granting
non-itemizing taxpayers a tax deduction of up to $250 for
their gifts. Incentives include a provision that allows people
to roll over their retirement accounts directly to a charity
without paying tax penalties.
Brent Hursey-McLaughlin, executive director of Miami
Urban Ministries, said the bill is a positive move, but
doubted it would have a major impact on the individual gifts
the ministry receives each year.
Tampa United Methodist Centers (TUMC), which receives
an estimated $400,000 of its $10.5 million annual budget from
individual giving, is on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Vietnamese church springs from childhood promise
Sabrina Lai Tu will never forget the promise she made to God as her
family journeyed on a boat from Vietnam to America in 1977.
As her very existence was being threatened by severe
dehydration, 8-year-old Tu asked God to save her life and promised
that if he did she would serve him for the rest of her life.
Tu is making good on her promise by reaching out to the
unchurched Vietnamese population in Tampa through the church she
started, Vietnamese Fellowship, in 1995.

Firefighter’s ordeal strengthens his faith
As a 1,200 degree ball of fire engulfed him, firefighter/paramedic
Steve Colbert was not only thinking of saving his life, but also the
life of an injured firefighter.
What began as a routine call to Clearwater Fire and
Rescue Engine 45 that a 12-story condominium was on fire at 6 a.m.
June 28, 2002, quickly escalated into a dire situation that would
leave three firefighters injured, including Colbert.
Colbert and his wife, Jeannine, attend St. Luke’s
United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg. He said he doesn’t see
himself as a hero, just a man who was doing the job he loves. “…Most
firefighters who are in a flashover don’t survive. I think I
survived because God has a purpose for me,” he said.

Correction
The June 6
issue of the "Florida United Methodist Review" included the story
"Kids get comfortable with church," featuring Interlachen United
Methodist Church’s outreach ministry and a grant the church received
from the Florida Conference’s Council of Bishops’ Initiative on
Children and Poverty Task Force (BICAP).
The name of the church’s pastor and grant amount received
were incorrectly stated. The pastor’s name is the Rev. A.C. Myers,
and the grant totaled $2,700, not $4397 as printed.
The "Review" staff apologizes for any inconvenience these
errors may have caused.
